BERLIN– HBO’s Game of Thrones has found a home on German free TV, with RTL2 picking up the first season of the Emmy and Golden Globe-winning fantasy epic. Thrones has aired on pay network TNT in Germany but the bow on RTL2 will give the show a much larger potential audience.
The acquisition is part of RTL2’s recent strategy of programming upscale and cutting-edge U.S. series, in part to change its image as a network of cheap reality shows.
The Munich-based channel recently snatched up AMC’s zombie drama The Walking Dead and has HBO’s Californication and Showtime’s Dexter in its lineup.
