Game of Thrones premiered to huge ratings Sunday, and we’ve already dissected its raciest scene and confusing characters, and given a rundown of its sex and violence. Now it’s time to look at next week’s episode.
Below The Hollywood Reporter breaks down eight key moments from the preview to Sunday’s anticipated return to the Seven Kingdoms. Warning: minor spoilers ahead.
1. Wedding Bells Will Ring
King Joffrey (Jack Gleeson) is finally making Margaery Tyrell (Natalie Dormer) his queen. For her sake, let’s hope it goes better than Robb Stark’s wedding.
2. Jaime Will Fight Bronn — But Why?
After losing a hand, Jaime (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) will clash swords with Tyrion’s hired killer Bronn (Jerome Flynn). This must be for one of two reasons: 1. Jaime and Bronn (or Jaime and Tyrion) have gotten into a major disagreement, or 2. Bronn is helping get Jaime back into fighting shape. The man lost his sword hand, after all. For Jaime’s sake, we hope it’s the latter.
3. Bran Ups the Mysticism
We finally get to see what happens to Bran (Isaac Hempstead-Wright) north of the Wall. Ahead of the season premiere, Hempstead-Wright told The Hollywood Reporter that Bran would explore his mystical powers more in season four, saying “they become highly important.” In this preview, Bran touches a tree, and it looks like he’ll have a vision. We already know he can see through the eyes’ of animals and even control his irewolf. What else can he do? Bran’s journey is supposedly highly important to the fate of the realm, though even he is unsure of that journey’s purpose. The new episode will surely give us more hints as to what that is.
4. Ramsay Snow Returns
Ramsay Snow (Iwan Rheon) has already proven himself among the most sadistic characters on Thrones. In the new preview, he’s shown running — bow and arrow in hand — after some poor woman. It looks like he’s found someone else to torment other than Theon. Which leaves us wondering, is Theon (Alfie Allen) still tied up and being tortured daily? Is he even alive?
5. Tyrion Is in Hot Water With Tywin
Tyrion (Peter Dinklage) has a private conversation with Varys (Conleth Hill), who tells the master of coin that Tywin does not make idle threats. In the past, Twyin threatened to hang the next prostitute he found in Tyrion’s bed. Could this conversation with Varys be related to Shae’s safety? Tyrion already tried to convince her to leave King’s Landing for her own good — and Varys (for different reasons) wants her to leave as well. Perhaps this will be the catalyst for him to force her out of King’s Landing.
6. Melisandre Is Still a Pyro
The Red Woman Melisandre (Carice van Houten) apparently hasn’t lost her penchant for burning people alive. Without Gendry’s royal blood to serve as a sacrifice, it looks like Melisandre is settling for other victims. Our question: Could she potentially sacrifice Stannis’ daughter, Shireen? Afterall, the blood of a king flows through her, too.
7. Joffrey Is Still The Worst
The King is shown dancing around his cake, holding a sword like he knows how to use it. He already got in a verbal fight with Tryion at his uncle’s own wedding. In the preview, he screams at Tyrion to kneel — so it’s safe to assume this wedding could be dangerous for the poor master of coin.
8. Dragons Take Flight
It’s implied that Daenerys’ (Emilia Clarke) three scaly children will be intimidating a city next week. We assume it’s Meereen, the slaver city the Mother of Dragons was approaching during this season premiere. Will they be unleashing fire on is masters?
