War is coming to Westeros, and everybody is acting accordingly.
HBO has just released a new trailer for the penultimate season of Game of Thrones, previewing the epic war that’s set to rock the Seven Kingdoms in the show’s seventh season. The nearly two-minute trailer focuses on all of the various players set to collide in the coming year of the show, from Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey) ruling from King’s Landing, to Daenerys Stormborn of House Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) making her move toward the Iron Throne, to Jon Snow (Kit Harington) settling into his new role as King in the North.
“Enemies to the east, enemies to the west, enemies to the south, enemies to the north,” Queen Cersei hisses as images of others flash, including Arya Stark (Maisie Williams) riding in the snow on a horse. “Whatever stands in our way? We will defeat it.”
The remainder of the trailer features the characters fans have grown to love and loathe in astonishing new circumstances: Unsullied and Dothraki warriors riding across Westeros for the first time all series, clashing against Lannister loyalists; Daenerys and her allies arriving at Dragonstone, which once belonged to House Targaryen before it became Stannis Baratheon’s stronghold; and much more.
It’s our best indication yet of the dragon-blazing battles ahead, as Thrones begins the process of drawing to a close. (Of course, the world of ice and fire will continue roaring for years to come, with George R.R. Martin’s five different successor shows currently in the planning stages.) War is coming, and it won’t be easy on characters and viewers alike — and, as always, it’s best for everyone if they heed the wise words of Ser Davos Seaworth (Liam Cunningham), who gets the best line of the trailer.
“If we don’t put aside our enmities and bound together, we will die,” he warns, “and then it won’t matter whose skeleton sits on the Iron Throne.”
