“All my allies are gone. I’m losing.”
It’s a bittersweet slice of humble pie indeed, as Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) is forced to chew on the fact that her campaign against House Lannister isn’t going exactly as planned. After boasting about her accomplishments and abundant supply of self-confidence in their first meeting together, Dany’s new words for Jon Snow (Kit Harington) are considerably less self-important, based on what’s seen in the trailer for next week’s episode, “The Spoils of War.”
Indeed, the episode’s name appears to be an appropriate one, given what’s seen throughout the preview. It begins with Cersei (Lena Headey) taking a meeting with her new friend Tycho Nestoris (Mark Gatiss) of the Iron Bank of Braavos, who promises she’ll be able to count on his services “as soon as the gold arrives.” Of course, the Lannisters are in great debt to the Iron Bank, but you know what they say about Lannisters and debt — and based on Jaime (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) sorting through massive piles of gold, it sure looks like the debt is on the way to being repaid.
Further victories for the Lannisters notwithstanding, it looks like the rest of the Thrones cast are at the edge of some deadly new developments. In one quick shot, Theon Greyjoy (Alfie Allen) is seen returning to Dragonstone, which could lead to an awkward confrontation with both the Mother of Dragons as well as the King in the North. (Remember that time Theon fake-murdered Jon’s brothers? Yeah, that wasn’t great.) In Winterfell, Sansa (Sophie Turner) ponders something quietly, while someone near and dear to her heart looks on at Winterfell from a close distance: Arya Stark (Maisie Williams), making good on her promise to return home. Maybe she’ll make it back in time to watch whatever sparring session is going down between Brienne (Gwendoline Christie) and Podrick (Daniel Portman), also teased in the preview.
