Showtime Networks is making quite a few executive changes now that top boss David Nevins has expanded his purview to cover creative throughout all of parent CBS Corp.
Nearly three months after Nevins was named chief creative officer of the TV giant, the Showtime CEO and chairman has promoted top lieutenants Gary Levine and Jana Winograde to serve as co-presidents of entertainment at the cable outfit. The new titles will see them splitting responsibility for developing and supervising all programming — which includes comedy, drama, film, unscripted and Showtime’s ever-growing documentary efforts. Serving as the liaisons to CBS Corp. domestic groups, the pair will also oversee production, program operations, business affairs, casting, scheduling, research and home entertainment, while continuing to report directly to Nevins.
“Gary and Jana are peerless in their roles. Both command great respect from their colleagues inside and outside the company, and they have been key in driving our growth,” Nevins, one of the biggest executive benefactors of the fall of former CBS Corp. boss Leslie Moonves, said Thursday in a statement. “As we invest more deeply in creating world-class content for our audiences, this new structure positions us strongly for the future of our business.”
Two other key promotions join Levine and Winograde. Amy Israel has been elevated to executive vp scripted programming, while Vinnie Malhotra now holds the same rank in nonfiction. They will report to Levine and Winograde, focusing in development and creative oversight across all genres.
“Amy and Vinnie have both been major forces behind the exceptional scripted and nonfiction programming that have shaped what Showtime is today,” added Nevins. “Each has tremendous instincts for the creators and stories that define cutting-edge television, and the proven ability to bring them to fruition. It is exciting for me to see them take on greater roles at the network.”
Beefing up the top executive ranks at Showtime is a given, considering how wide Nevins’ new purview really is. He oversees programming, marketing and research across CBS Television Studios, the CBS broadcast network’s entertainment division, programming on the burgeoning stand-alone platform CBS All Access and CBS’ interest in its joint venture with Warner Bros. Entertainment (No. 5 network The CW) as well as Showtime.
And Showtime, increasingly reliant on its own stand-alone subscription service, has been ramping up its own originals production. A slew of new comedies (Black Monday), late-night efforts (Desus & Mero) and miniseries (The Loudest Voice in the Room) join the schedule in 2019 — with hot drama Halo in the pipeline as well and more than a dozen other projects in development.
