Hulu’s variety show from Sarah Silverman is starting to take shape.
The streaming service has hired Gavin Purcell as the showrunner and executive producer of I Love You, America, the 10-episode weekly topical show from Funny or Die that was ordered to series in March. Silverman, Will Ferrell, Adam McKay and Amy Zvi also serve as executive producers on the series.
Purcell’s jump back to the variety show space means he’s leaving behind his current role as the head of video at Vox. “Since joining Vox Media, Gavin has brought a tremendous energy and expertise to video programming across the company – launching a new slate of shows, producing successful live programming, and fueling our fastest growth to date,” said Melissa Bell, Vox’s publisher. “We’re very happy for Gavin, though his talent, hard work, and kindness will be greatly missed.”
I Love You, America will follow Silverman as she looks to connect with people who may not agree with her personal opinions through honesty, humor, genuine interest in others and not taking herself too seriously. The comedienne feels that, now more than ever, it is crucial to connect with un-like-minded people.
“There’s never been a more perfect time for a show like this, and I’m so excited to be involved. Also, Sarah seems nice, so there’s that,” Purcell said Tuesday in a statement. Added Silverman: “I have a hunch that hiring Gavin will prove to be one of my smarter life decisions.”
Prior to joining Vox, Purcell was a producer on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, where he led all aspects of on-air production in addition to a special focus on interactive elements for many years.
Purcell is repped by UTA.
