George Clooney has played heartthrobs in numerous films and on TV shows over the years — but when he met his now-wife, Amal Alamuddin, he thought they were just “buddies.”
In a new clip of an upcoming episode of David Letterman’s Netflix talk show My Next Guest Needs No Introduction, Clooney recalls how a mutual friend asked to bring Alamuddin on a visit to Clooney’s house.
Not long after, Clooney says, “I got a call from my agent who called me and said, ‘I met this woman who’s coming to your house who you’re gonna marry.'”
“So, now this was arranged by an agent, your talent agent had done all the paperwork ahead of time,” Letterman quips.
Clooney then recalls how the pair “stayed up all night talking” and how he got Alamuddin’s email address, but wasn’t sure if she was interested in dating. “I got her email address ‘cause she was going to send me some pictures of my parents, and then we started writing and I didn’t really — I didn’t know if she wanted to go out with me. I just thought, you know, we were buddies,” Clooney says.
“Who would, George? … Let’s be frank: Who really would want to go out with you?” Letterman jokes.
Clooney’s next project, a television adaptation of Joseph Heller’s novel Catch-22 that he will star in, executive produce and direct, is set to stream on Hulu. It is Clooney’s first time as a television regular in nearly two decades.
The next episode of My Next Guest Needs No Introduction premieres Friday, Feb. 9, on Netflix.
