Epix has ordered a series based on the 1990 Elmore Leonard novel and the 1995 John Travolta film of the same name, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
The dark comedy centers on Miles Daly, who works as muscle for a murderous crime ring in Nevada. For the sake of his daughter, he attempts to change professions and become a movie producer, laundering money through a Hollywood film. But instead of leaving the criminal world behind, he accidentally brings it with him to Los Angeles.
Davey Holmes (Shameless, In Treatment) adapted the project for the small screen and will executive produce. MGM, which also produced the movie, will also produce the series through MGM Television. (MGM is also joint venture partner in Epix.) Production on the series will start this fall for a summer 2017 debut.

Get Shorty, which also starred Danny DeVito, Rene Russo and Dennis Farina, took in $115 million at the box office and even spawned a sequel, Be Cool. The novel was a New York Times best-seller for Leonard, who also was an executive producer on FX’s long-running drama Justified, which was based on his short story Fire in the Hole.
Get Shorty is one of three original series coming to Epix, the others being political series Graves and drama Berlin Station.
