Fox’s 911: Lone Star is adding to its live-saving crew.
Former Suits star Gina Torres will join the drama’s second season as a series regular. Torres, who’s perennially at the top of casting wish lists in pilot season, will star opposite Rob Lowe in the Austin-set spinoff of 911.
Her casting also represents a reunion with showrunner Tim Minear. The two worked together on cult favorite Firefly in 2002.
“We are so excited to be expanding our 911-verse with the addition of Gina Torres,” said Minear. “I’ve been dying to write for her again ever since Firefly. Gina brings warmth, intelligence and command to everything she does. 2020 is finally looking up.”
Torres will play paramedic Capt. Tommy Vega in 911: Lone Star. She was at the top of her game when she hung up her uniform to raise her twin daughters. For eight years everything was great, until COVID-19 changed everything. With her husband’s restaurant going under, Tommy has no choice but to re-enter the workforce to support her family. Though it breaks her heart to be apart from her girls, Tommy will show the world that no matter how much time has passed, when she puts on that uniform, she’s still a boss.
Torres starred in USA’s Suits for seven seasons and toplined its spinoff Pearson. She’s coming off ABC’s pilot The Brides, a vampire drama that was a surprise pass for the network in the spring. Her credits also include Alias, Westworld, Hannibal and 24. She is repped by Framework Entertainment, Domain Talent and Schreck Rose.
911: Lone Star is set to resume filming in the fall and premiere in early 2021. Minear executive produces with Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk.
