Writing partners Alex Barnow and Marc Firek are striking out on their own.
In what marks the first solo deals for both writers, Barnow and Firek have each inked two-year overall deals with Sony Pictures Television. As part of their new pacts, they will continue to work together as co-executive producers on ABC’s breakout comedy The Goldbergs as well as develop new fare for the studio together.
The deals come at a challenging time for broadcast comedy, with precious few new entries from the 2013-14 season surviving (The Goldbergs a rare exception) and two of the big four broadcast networks announcing in May that they’d be pulling back on comedy blocks this coming season.
STORY: ABC Renews ‘Modern Family,’ ‘The Goldbergs’ and ‘The Middle’
Prior to working on The Goldbergs for Sony, Barnow and Firek created and executive produced Mr. Sunshine, a short-lived Matthew Perry vehicle through Sony. Their other comedy experience includes time on CBS’ Rules of Engagement and Fox’s Til Death, both times as co-executive producers for at least some portion of the shows’ run.
Barnow and Firek — whose other credits include Out of Practice, Like Family and The In-Laws — are repped by UTA and Hansen Jacobson.
