“I think Ricky [Gervais] made a decision about returning, but we haven’t,” joked NBC Entertainment chairman Bob Greenblatt to reporters Wednesday about whether 2016 Golden Globes host Ricky Gervais would return for another hosting gig.
Even though ratings were down slightly from the last three outings hosted by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, the awards show generated 19 million social interactions and Gervais continued to make headlines days after the telecast. “A five percent decrease year to year [meant] we popped champagne,” clarified Greenblatt.
Given the success of his telecast, the British comedian could very well return for his fifth gig. Many critics applauded his performance as edgy and daring, but there were also those who criticized the comedian for his apparent lack of respect for an awards show that, as he exclaimed to viewers, has asked him to host “four times!”
If NBC and Gervais do decide to part ways next year, there were several standouts who showed off their hosting potential during Sunday’s show.
Hollywood’s new “It” girl duo Amy Schumer and Jennifer Lawrence set Twitter ablaze with petitions for “A.Schu” and “J.Law” to co-host next year after they competed against each other (Lawrence won) and presented together, while the Revenant bear bit from Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum also put the Jump Street co-stars on the night’s most-talked-about list.
Andy Samberg, who hosted the 2015 Emmys, seemed to be auditioning for the role with his well-rehearsed intro for Best TV Comedy Actress, and first-time nominee Aziz Ansari became a trending moment of the night thanks to his well-timed prop, a book titled “Losing to Jeffrey Tambor With Dignity” (even though they both lost).
America Ferrera and Eva Longoria emerged as another comedic duo when they hilariously poked fun at people who can’t tell Latina actresses apart.
After the show, MC Hammer told THR that Idris Elba and “that British accent” would be great, Boys Don’t Cry director Kimberly Peirce put her vote in for Saturday Night Live‘s Kate McKinnon and Chris Tucker nominated himself for the job.
