CBS is bringing The Good Fight to a bigger audience in the summer.
The broadcast network will air the first season of the CBS All Access series, a spinoff of The Good Wife, starting June 16. The formal announcement comes after CBS Corp. acting president and CEO Joseph Ianniello said the network was considering it during the company’s annual shareholders meeting. The summer run would give the network additional “new” programming while promoting both The Good Fight and the subscription-based CBS All Access.
“For three seasons, The Good Fight has been a big success for CBS All Access,” said CBS Entertainment president Kelly Kahl. “We’re excited to provide our network audience the opportunity to catch up with characters they first fell in love with on The Good Wife, as well as introduce new viewers to this outstanding, critically acclaimed drama.
Added Julie McNamara, executive vp original content for CBS All Access, “The Good Fight was the first original series to launch on CBS All Access and continues to be a major driver for our service as it heads into its upcoming fourth season. With the network’s special summer broadcast of The Good Fight‘s first season, we look forward to not only introducing the series to new audiences, but also creating further awareness for CBS All Access where viewers can continue to binge the second and third seasons of this exceptional series.”
The critically acclaimed drama wrapped its third season in May and has been renewed for a fourth. Christine Baranski and Cush Jumbo have continued their Good Wife roles on The Good Fight, starring alongside Audra McDonald, Rose Leslie, Sarah Steele, Michael Boatman, Nyambi Nyambi and Delroy Lindo.
The first season will premiere at 9 p.m. June 16 with two-hour blocks running that night and on June 23. Starting June 30, it will air at 10 p.m. The second-season premiere of Instinct moves back to June 30 from its original June 16 date.
Creators and executive producers Michelle and Robert King also have a new drama, Evil, set to air on the broadcast network in the fall.
CBS said earlier this year that its streaming platforms, including CBS All Access and Showtime’s SVOD service, have a combined 8 million subscribers but did not specify how many each individual service has. Regardless, the potential exposure for a summer run of The Good Fight would be much higher on the broadcast network, which reaches some 100 million homes.
The series premiere of The Good Fight aired on CBS in February 2017 before moving exclusively to All Access.
CBS’ summer schedule includes four other scripted series — Blood & Treasure, Instinct, the final season of Elementary and the remaining run of comedy Life in Pieces — along with unscripted mainstay Big Brother and new competition series Love Island.
