The seesaw between Today and Good Morning America has begun. After toppling Today’s 852-week winning streak three weeks ago, GMA took another week from Today, its second in more than 16 years of the morning TV wars.
The ABC morning show averaged 5.29 million viewers for the week ending April 27, compared to NBC’s 5.13 million, a difference of 166,000 viewers.
Today still bested GMA among viewers in the 25-54 demographic (2.23 million compared to 2.13 million) upon which most news programming is sold.
For the week, GMA posted gains of 6 percent among total viewers and 10 percent in the demo, hitting an eight-week high.
The win is significant for GMA, since Matt Lauer was back in his seat after being on vacation during the week GMA snapped Today’s streak.
Of course, the team at Today is taking none of this lying down. On Wednesday and Thursday, Lauer will talk to Bobby Brown, which will be his first interview since the death of ex-wife Whitney Houston.
