NBC is booking a return trip to The Good Place.
The network on Monday announced that it has renewed the comedy for a second season.
Good Place will return for a 13-episode second season. The renewal comes less than two weeks after the Kristen Bell-Ted Danson comedy wrapped its first season with a massive cliffhanger.
“Mike Schur has always had one of the most fertile and imaginative minds in comedy, but what he brought us with the first season of The Good Place was just extraordinary,” NBC Entertainment president Jennifer Salke said in a statement. “We absolutely can’t wait to see where these characters go, literally, in season two. A big thank-you to Mike, the writers and cast for delivering a series in which we all take such enormous pride.”
During its 13-episode first season, Good Place averaged a 1.9 rating among adults 18-49 in live-plus-7 numbers. The series also has drawn praise from critics, with THR TV critic Tim Goodman calling it “a comedy unlike anything else on TV right now” when it launched in September.
Good Place is the second first-year series to get a pickup at NBC, joining family drama This Is Us, which was recently renewed for two more seasons of 18 episodes each.
Unlike This Is Us, The Good Place is produced in-house by Universal Television. Parks and Recreation grad Schur, who created The Good Place, also executive produces with David Miner, Morgan Sackett and Drew Goddard. William Jackson Harper, Jameela Jamil, Manny Jacinto and D’Arcy Carden also star in the afterlife comedy. The Good Place also was one of the first ordered to series for the 2016-17 season. NBC ordered the comedy straight-to-series in August 2015.
