The Good Place is staying in place at NBC, as the network has renewed the comedy for a fourth season in 2019-20.
The pickup comes a couple days before the show’s last episode of the fall, which airs Thursday. The Mike Schur-created series will return in January for its final three episodes of season three.
An episode count for season four has yet to be determined. The Good Place is the second NBC series to earn a place on next season’s schedule, joining fellow Thursday comedy Will & Grace (which received a very early pickup).
“Congratulations to Mike Schur and an exceptional cast and crew, all of whom collaborate to create a thoughtful, mind-bending and hysterical series unlike anything else on television,” Tracey Pakosta and Lisa Katz, co-presidents, scripted programming at NBC Entertainment, said Tuesday in a statement. “We can’t wait to see what unexpected stories the new season will bring.”
The Good Place stars Kristen Bell as self-described Arizona trashbag Eleanor Shellstrop, who entered the afterlife in what appeared to be the titular Good Place despite knowing deep down she didn’t belong there but set out to make herself worthy of remaining. William Jackson Harper, Jameela Jamil and Manny Jacinto also star as fellow souls navigating the afterlife, along with Ted Danson as Good Place architect Michael and D’Arcy Carden as Janet, a repository of all knowledge in the universe.
Season three has followed the four back to Earth, with help from Michael and Janet, as they continue their quest to accumulate enough points to stay in the Good Place.
Through nine episodes, the series is averaging a 1.6 rating among adults 18-49 and 4.6 million viewers (off about 16 percent from its 2017-18 average) after a week of delayed viewing. Its seven-day demo rating more than doubles with streaming and further delayed viewing after five weeks.
Schur, David Miner, Morgan Sackett and Drew Goddard executive produce The Good Place.
