Emmy-nominated The Good Place star Ted Danson got extra love during Saturday’s Comic-Con panel.
Moderator (and Good Place guest star and podcast host) Marc Evan Jackson made sure Danson was addressed by his Emmy-nominee status — by both the panelists and the fans — every time a question came his way.
Series star Kristen Bell shared that part of her initial reason for signing on to the series was her great affection for Danson. Bell’s fandom for her co-star even predated their 2012 film, Big Miracle. (Bell said when she first met him during that production, she told him she checked into her hotel using the name of his Damages character’s wife. Danson joked he promptly changed hotel rooms.)
For Danson’s part, he downplayed how much he brings to the series. “Really, what we do is show up and say these astounding words in these astounding locations with these astounding bowties, and you let the words play on you,” he said. “I’m hitting my marks and saying Mike [Schur]’s words, and it’s magic.”
Then he quipped, “Sorry, this is Emmy time, and you have to adopt some false humility.”
The actor was more serious when a fan asked about how this role has introduced his work to a new generation of television fans. “It’s wonderful,” he said. “It’s actually a deeper question, because [Cheers‘] Sam Malone was entirely about his penis. We’ve come very close to establishing that Michael doesn’t have one. It’s the perfect arc in life.”
Though nothing was said on the panel about the third season, the first two minutes of the season three premiere were shown to the enthusiastic crowd. In the opening moments, Michael meets the Guard (guest star Mike O’Malley), as he pitches — and starts — his plan to keep Eleanor (Bell), Chidi (William Jackson Harper), Tahani (Jameela Jamil) and Jason (Manny Jacinto) alive on Earth.
After the clip, a clearly emotional Danson thanked the fans for their investment in the show: “It’s been astounding.”
