Greg Kelly, co-anchor of Good Day New York and son of Ray Kelly, the NYC police commissioner, is being investigated following a report by a young woman claiming he raped her.
According to The New York Times, the woman — who filed her complaint Tuesday night — accused Kelly, 43, of raping her last October after they met on the street and had drinks in downtown Manhattan. The two went to her office at a law firm, where she claimed the sexual assault occurred. After the meeting, the NYT reported, the two stayed in touch via phone and text messages. The woman later told her boyfriend about it, and he approached Kelly’s high-profile father at an public event, informing him that Kelly had raped her.
“He said, ‘Your son ruined my girlfriend’s life,'” NYPD spokesman Paul Browne told the New York Daily News. “The commissioner said ‘Well, what do you mean?’ He said he didn’t want to talk about it here so the commissioner told him to send a letter.”
The Manhattan district attorney’s office is investigating the alleged incident because of a conflict of interest presented by the fact that Kelly’s father is the city’s police chief; Kelly has denied the woman’s account.
“Mr. Kelly is aware that the New York County District Attorney’s office is conducting an investigation,” said a statement issued by his lawyer Wednesday night. “Mr. Kelly strenuously denies any wrongdoing of any kind, and is cooperating fully with the district attorney’s investigation. We know the district attorney’s investigation will prove Mr. Kelly’s innocence.”
Kelly was absent without explanation on Thursday’s edition of Good Day new York, on the Fox affiliate channel WNYW. His co-anchor acknowledged the allegations against Kelly and noted his attorney-issued denial.
