ABC is hoping lightning can strike again for Grey’s Anatomy.
After successfully launching spinoff Private Practice, ABC is working on a second offshoot from Shonda Rhimes‘ long-running medical drama.
The new spinoff, which remains without an official title (Seattle Fire, anyone?), is rounding out its cast in advance of its midseason debut on ABC.

THE PREMISE
The 10-episode spinoff, picked up straight to series, is set in Seattle and focuses on firefighters from the captain down the ranks to the newest recruit in their personal and professional lives. The castmembers are expected to be introduced in an episode of the flagship series this season. The firefighter series will be the second spinoff to come out of Grey’s Anatomy following Kate Walsh starrer Private Practice. The latter ran for six seasons and wrapped its run in 2013.
THE CREATIVE TEAM
From Shonda Rhimes and her Shondaland partner, Betsy Beers, Grey’s Anatomy alum Stacy McKee penned the script and serves as showrunner. She exec produces the ABC Studios drama alongside producing director Paris Barclay.
THE CAST
Jaina Lee Ortiz (Rosewood) is set as the female lead in the untitled spinoff. Details about her role are being kept under wraps.
Jason George will segue over to the spinoff and reprise his Grey’s Anatomy role as Ben Warren. In the season 13 finale, Ben went full firefighter mode as he worked to save Stephanie (Jerrika Hinton). In the season 14 premiere, he described the experience as a “rush,” so look for that to be further explored. “He’s leaning into that,” Grey’s co-showrunner Krista Vernoff told THR. “That is an extremely complicated thing for Bailey [Chandra Wilson, who plays his wife] to process.”

Miguel Sandoval (Bad Judge) will portray Capt. Pruitt, who is described as tough and respected — and loved by his subordinates. He’s a progressive thinker who advocates for his crew, even if it means standing up to his superiors. He’s been offered promotions in the past but had declined because he’d rather be on the front line than behind a desk.
Okieriete Onaodowan (Hamilton) is set as Dean, a single bachelor who uses his firefighter job to entice the ladies. He’s honest but walks the line with being a jerk.
Danielle Savre (Too Close to Home) is Maya, a former Olympic athlete who is driven, ambitious, hard-working and competitive — even with her closes friends. She’s a firefighter who is straightforward, unapologetic and darkly funny with an edge.
Jay Hayden (The Catch) will play Travis, an openly gay firefighter who is well-liked, funny, fun and always plays by the rules.
Barrett Doss (Iron Fist) will portray Victoria, a firefighter who is a bit of an instigator who enjoys pulling pranks and being the life of the party. Her brazen demeanor can be a crutch she hides behind as she covers up her own insecurities. Travis is her closest friend at the station — and potentially in life too.
Alberto Frezza (Dead of Summer) as Ryan. The character is described as a clever and sensitive reformed troublemaker who now works as a police officer.
PREMIERE DATE
The spinoff will debut midseason. A formal premiere date has not yet been determined. The characters will likely be introduced during an episode of Grey’s Anatomy this fall.
