[Warning: This story contains spoilers from Thursday’s “Puzzle With a Piece Missing” episode of ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy.]
The proverbial cat is out of the bag on ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy. Well, at least one of them is.
During the second episode of the veteran medical drama’s 11th season, Maggie Pierce took center stage — with new cast member Kelly McCreary taking on the show’s iconic voiceover — and told Meredith the truth: They’re both the daughters of Ellis Grey (Kate Burton). Meredith’s reaction? She thinks Grey Sloan’s newest doc is crazy — and lying about their parentage.
The reveal comes after the half-sisters continued clashing, with Mer (Ellen Pompeo) ultimately going to Owen (Kevin McKidd) to flag Maggie’s unethical behavior after she let a patient intentionally die. And as Maggie is quickly making enemies with Jo (Camilla Luddington) and Alex (Justin Chambers) after she gets the latter unintentionally fired from Dr.
Butthole Lebackes’ service. On the flipside, Maggie wins over Bailey (Chandra Wilson) and she joins Webber (James Pickens Jr.) — whom she has no idea is her biological father — as an ally.
So what comes next? The Hollywood Reporter turned to McCreary to get the scoop.
Maggie has told Meredith that she’s Ellis’ daughter. Where do these two go from here?
Maggie and Meredith go their separate ways. Meredith goes down a path of wanting to find out whether this could possibly be true because she basically calls Maggie a liar to her face. Maggie tries to make her way and connect again with Richard, who is at that point her only real personal relationship that she’s developed at the hospital. Richard is the only one she can talk to.
How will Meredith work to prove that Maggie is indeed Ellis’ daughter? How will Maggie play a role in that?
Meredith will delve deep into the past. We’ll see some flashbacks, how things become clear to Meredith — they will be depicted for the audience. Maggie won’t have a hand in that; she doesn’t know anything. It really is a separate journey that Meredith goes on to find out the truth.
Meredith will eventually have to come around to accepting that they’re half-sisters. How long can we expect Meredith to be on this rampage against Maggie?
That’s some pretty heavy information to get used to. It will take some time for Meredith to do her research and find out the truth of it. The audience shouldn’t expect an immediate reconciliation between the two. For Maggie, she’s giving up their relationship as lost after Meredith walks away from her. It’s the truth as far as Maggie knows it and how Meredith handled it feels pretty bad to her. Maggie doesn’t want to pursue the relationship, so it’ll be in Meredith’s hands from here.
How will Meredith respond with Richard considering he knows he had an affair with Ellis?
He’s the only one who is around the hospital who would know anything about Ellis, so that is definitely possible. He’s the missing piece in this puzzle in terms of the relationship and shedding light on Ellis’ past.
Richard and Amelia (Caterina Scorsone) seem to be the only ones on Team Maggie. Considering their relationships with Meredith and Derek, what kind of friction is that going to cause?
It’s a secret. I think we can trust Amilia to keep her word on that. The way it affects the Shepherd family is something we will see right away. It stays quietly in the world of Richard and Meredith and Maggie for a little while before it comes out.
Maggie has also gotten in the middle of Bailey and Alex’s fight for the board seat. How will she navigate that landmine?
Maggie gets to stay out of the middle of all of that. She is keeping her head down, doing her work and not getting involved in the politics for a while.
There really is drama everywhere Maggie turns. How long can she stay in this toxic environment?
Exactly! I think something has to give, right? There’s got to be a major reconciliation at some point — or a friendship — otherwise, it’s not a place where she will want to be. She’s got this warm and fuzzy family life at home back in Boston and that will be her new tension: Whether she made the right choice to come to Seattle and search for answers about her biological mother.
