All eyes are on Meredith on season 11 of Grey’s Anatomy — but is she starting to look beyond Derek?
The new key art for ABC’s veteran medical drama puts Mer (Ellen Pompeo) front and center and promotes what showrunner Shonda Rhimes has dubbed a “Meredith-centric season.”
The poster, exclusive to The Hollywood Reporter, also comes with the show’s new tagline: “The life you save may be your own.” That could point to Meredith learning that, as Cristina (Sandra Oh) told her, that she — and not McDreamy is the “sun.”
Season 11 will pick up with the married couple still at an impasse on their future, as Derek (Patrick Dempsey) wants wants go to Washington while Mer opts to remain in Seattle. Watch the first season 11 footage featuring their tense confrontation here.
“The idea that Derek thinks his career is more important than Meredith’s is both true for him and frustrating for her,” Rhimes told THR in July. “It doesn’t make him a bad person because his career is more important than hers right now. The idea that she has set back her career to deal with the kids and let him shine is also very frustrating for her as well. She’s got a chance to step forward and say, ‘I’m not going to do that anymore.’
“Whether she’s right or wrong is also an argument to be had,” she added. “I think it’s a really great conversation that a lot of people are having in this moment in time with their career and their spouses. I think it’s true and what happens next is going to be very interesting. Who gets resentful and who feels cheated is also going to be interesting. Does he go or does he stay? What happens if she goes, too? Are we going to have a show in which Meredith and Derek are in Washington and everybody else is here? We have the sets; we could do it. We’ve talked about it.”
