Grey’s Anatomy co-showrunners/executive producers Tony Phelan and Joan Rater are heading to CBS Television Studios, inking their first development deal.
Under the two-year pact, the writing partners and real-life couple will develop their own original projects for the studio. The duo will segue from Grey’s Anatomy following the upcoming 10th season of the Shonda Rhimes series and begin developing for CBSTVS in summer 2014.

The pair now serve as co-showrunners/EPs on ABC’s No. 1-rated drama, having worked their way up the ranks during their eight-season tenure on the series. Phelan also has directed multiple episodes of the medical drama. Season 10 will be their last on the series. They were tapped co-showrunners in 2011 and were under a previous deal with ABC Studios that kept them on board the network’s Thursday staple, overseeing the writers room.
In addition to Grey’s, Phelan and Rater were co-producers on NBC’s Law & Order: Trial by Jury. They are repped by UTA and Myman Greenspan.
Phelan and Rater become the latest to sign with CBSTVS. Alex Kurtzman and Robert Orci‘s K/O Paper Products recently entered into a three-year development deal with the studio. Raising Hope‘s Greg Garcia also set up shop there, signing a four-year pact that has produced fall comedy The Millers starring Will Arnett.
