With Halloween falling on a weekday again, several of the morning and daytime talk shows celebrated the holiday by wearing costumes. George Clooney and his new wife, Amal, were a popular choice, with Ellen DeGeneres, Meredith Vieira and Good Morning America co-host George Stephanopoulos, joined by his wife Ali Wentworth, all dressing up as parts of the couple.
While Stephanopoulos grayed his hair and wore a suit and sunglasses, DeGeneres wore a wedding dress and dark wig and attached a life-size Clooney doll. She debuted her costume by walking out of the couple’s famous People magazine cover. Vieira opted for Amal’s casual Venice attire, complete with a large white hat.
“I like Halloween because it’s the one time of year you can dress up however you want, and pretend you’re someone you’d never be in real life,” DeGeneres joked. “For me, that’s married to a man.”
Below, check out video of DeGeneres’ Halloween special, including her costumed guests, as well the costumes worn by the hosts of Good Morning America, Today, Fox & Friends, Live! With Kelly and Michael, The Queen Latifah Show, The View and The Meredith Vieira Show.
[Editor’s note: Video and more shows will be added throughout the day as today’s episodes air and videos are posted online.]
Good Morning America: The ABC morning show featured a number of pop-culture inspired costumes, including Maleficent (Amy Robach), Elsa from Frozen (Robin Roberts), Tom Cruise‘s Top Gun character, Maverick (Tim Tebow), Ariana Grande (Ginger Zee), Prince George (Lara Spencer in a carriage) and the aforementioned George and Amal Clooney. The show also welcomed special guest Nelly, but you’ll have to watch the video below to see what costume he wore.
Today: It may be Friday, but NBC’s Today was all about Saturday Night Live this year, with the hosts dressing up as some of the long-running NBC sketch comedy’s most memorable characters. Willie Geist and Tamron Hall transformed themselves into the Spartan cheerleaders played by Will Ferrell and Cheri Oteri. Natalie Morales, meanwhile, dressed as Molly Shannon‘s Mary Katherine Gallagher. Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb played Mike Myers and Dana Carvey‘s Wayne and Garth in a “Wayne’s World” bit. Al Roker and Lester Holt played The Blues Brothers. Matt Lauer transformed himself into the androgynous Pat (no Baywatch swimsuit this year).
And co-host Savannah Guthrie made a surprise appearance, just a few days before her official return from maternity leave, as one of the moms in the “Mom Jeans” digital short. She was joined by Today correspondent Jenna Bush Hager and former co-host Meredith Vieira. The SNL-Today switch continued with Kenan Thompson playing Al Roker, delivering a weather report and introducing the segment. The Today hosts were also featured in their own Saturday Night Live-inspired intro. Watch the full costume extravaganza below.
Fox & Friends: The gang at Fox & Friends had a super celebration, dressing as superheroes. Steve Doocy was Captain America. Kimberly Guilfoyle dressed up as Wonder Woman, Tucker Carlson went green to play The Incredible Hulk and Maria Molina dressed as Batgirl. The hosts were also joined by a festive group of kids as they discussed last-minute costumes for little ones.
Live! With Kelly and Michael: Live! With Kelly and Michael‘s “Best Halloween Show Ever…Seriously” featured more than 50 costumes, with Kelly Ripa dressing as everyone from Taylor Swift to Allison Williams‘ Peter Pan to Daenerys Targaryen from Game of Thrones. Co-host Michael Strahan‘s costumes, in various taped segments and the live show, included Crazy Eyes from Orange Is the New Black, Christopher Walken‘s Captain Hook, Mike Tyson and Game of Thrones‘ Jon Snow.
The hosts also spoofed Downton Abbey, Mad Men, Kim Kardashian and Kanye West, and did their own rendition of Taylor Swift‘s “Shake it Off” video, which also included outtakes from their earlier segments, allowing that to serve as somewhat of a recap. The show began with a scarier Halloween celebration, though, with the co-hosts walking through a deserted New York and arriving at their abandoned studio to discover that a zombie apocalypse had occurred. Zombie versions of Ripa and Strahan kicked off the show with a mock report from Anderson Cooper showing other stars being attacked by the undead. Victims included Neil Patrick Harris, Ted Danson, Michael Keaton, Emmy Rossum, Hugh Jackman, Sofia Vergara, Kerry Washington, Bill O’Reilly, Tina Fey and Emma Thompson. Watch some of Live‘s Halloween celebration below.
The Queen Latifah Show: Queen Latifah also opted for a Maleficent costume, complete with giant wings, walking out onto a smoke-filled stage and spookily intoning “Happy Halloween!” She later twirled and struck a few poses in her winged garb. As for why she chose to dress as Maleficent, Latifah said, “You know she seems so evil in that movie, but I think she’s just wounded. The story is about how we deal with our wounds and what we do to become strong again. I love that message and that’s why I chose her to be my costume.” The host, who noted that she’s using some of the same props used by Maleficent star Angelina Jolie in the movie, also had a treat for her audience, giving all of them copies of Maleficent and Planes: Fire and Rescue on Blu-ray.
The View: The View co-hosts also got into the spirit for Halloween, all donning movie-inspired costumes, with clips preceding their appearances on stage. Rosie Perez dressed as Cleopatra, Nicolle Wallace was The Hunger Games‘ Effie Trinket, Rosie O’Donnell wore an Edward Scissorhands costume, and Whoopi Goldberg was the Black Swan.
The Meredith Vieira Show: Meredith Vieira also dressed up as Amal Clooney and brought along a life-size George Clooney doll, but she opted for Amal’s Venice gondola attire, complete with a large white hat, and decorated her set to look like the Italian city where Amal and George said, “I do.” Continuing her Amal impression after she sat down, Vieira said “I bagged this boy that everybody wanted, and I have the ring to prove it.”
The Ellen DeGeneres Show: The host wasn’t the only one who dressed up for the holiday, with Star Wars fan Daniel Radcliffe joining her as Boba Fett and Scandal‘s Katie Lowes dressing up as a Tooth Fairy.
