It will have been a whopping 201 days since the last new episode of Happy Endings when the ABC comedy returns (to a new night) this Tuesday. And ahead of its third season opener, The Hollywood Reporter went on set as a part of our new ongoing video series of actors walking through the fake world where they spend most of their days.
Casey Wilson (Penny) and Adam Pally (Max) are first up in the two-part trip to Happy Endings‘ Paramount Pictures lot, and the duo show off their characters’ vastly different abodes.
Penny’s fancy condo, complete with awkward real-life photos of a teenage Wilson — “I’m looking like a kindergarten-teacher-slash-grandma” — and useless accent pieces, also includes possible subliminal messaging from the crew.
“I noticed they put a lot of dieting books in here,” says Wilson. “Is that the set designers giving Penny a hint — or me?”
Max’s dilapidated loft, strew with empty bottles of curiously non-alcoholic O’Doul’s, is filled with an eclectic mix of popular culture, such as an out-of-place magazine with a Blink 182 cover story, some very bad DVDs and, the pièce de résistance, an original movie poster from 1980s robot comedy Short Circuit 2.

Pally’s familiarity with the key art is truly something to marvel.

Happy Endings returns to ABC this Tuesday, Oct. 23, at 9 p.m. on ABC.
