A forthcoming Malaysia- and Singapore-set remake of Endemol Shine’s hit noir detective series The Bridge got a considerable boost Tuesday as HBO boarded the project as a TV partner throughout much of the Asia-Pacific region.
The project was set up as an original production by Hong Kong-based streaming video platform Viu. The company, backed by PCCW and Vuclip, is working with Malaysian studio Double Vision to produce the series.
HBO Asia said it will begin airing the new version on Nov. 26 via HBO, HBO Go and HBO on Demand throughout the 23 Asian territories where it is active. Viu will simultaneously release the show in 16 Asian and Middle Eastern markets.
The Asian version will star Bront Palarae, Rebecca Lim, Cheryl Samad and Tony Eusoff. It will be directed by Lee Thean-jeen and Jason Chong. Like the original, the show begins with a a body found on the border of two countries, forcing investigators from each territory to work together to solve the case.
The original version of The Bridge was created and written by Hans Rosenfeldt as a joint production between Sweden’s Filmlance International, part of Endemol Shine Group, and Denmark’s Nimbus Film. Prior remakes have been set along the U.S.-Mexico border and the U.K.-France border.
Although HBO Asia has its own slate of originals under production, the company said The Bridge fits in with its broader strategy of staying competitive by bringing fresh programming to the region.
“HBO Asia is committed to quality original local programming, and working with Viu on The Bridge is another step toward that,” said Jonathan Spink, CEO of HBO Asia. “This adaptation of The Bridge will add to our ever-growing lineup of Asian original content that will resonate with audiences in the region and around the world.”
