ODESSA, UKRAINE — HBO is going to set up a Russian version before the end of the year in cooperation with the local TV series producer Amedia, according to a report in a local business daily.
On July 19, Vedomosti quoted sources in the management of Russian cable and satellite companies’ management as saying that they had been approached about transmitting HBO channels’ localized versions. According to the report, HBO is coming to Russia thanks to Leonard Blavatnik’s Access Industries, which owns a controlling stake in Amedia.
A spokesperson for Amedia told The Hollywood Reporter that the company could not provide any comments at this point. An HBO spokesman in New York said that the company has nothing to announce.
Meanwhile, Vedomosti quoted a source in Access Industries as saying that Time Warner and Amedia have formed a joint venture to launch HBO in Russia, in which “tens millions of dollars a year” will be invested. Reportedly, three localized HBO channels will be available on cable and satellite, and the satellite provider NTV Plus will be the first company to offer HBO channels to its subscribers.
Amedia is one of Russia’s biggest producers of TV series. It produced, among others, Ne Rodis Krasivoy – the Russian version of the Columbian telenovella Yo Soy Betty La Fea, and Zakrytaya Shkola, the adaptation of the Spanish television series El internado. A year ago, it launched its own TV channel, Amedia, which is available via satellite and cable.
