ROME – Sky Italia and HBO on Thursday announced a deal that will bring some of U.S. cable television’s most popular programs to Italy on a new HD channel.
The fourth seasons of Game of Thrones and Boardwalk Empire are among the titles that will screen on the new Sky Atlantic HD channel.
Also on tap: the first season of the highly touted new series True Detective, which stars Oscar winner Matthew McConaughey and Oscar nominee Woody Harrelson as two detectives whose lives become entangled during a long search for a serial killer.
Sky Italia, part of Rupert Murdoch‘s 21st Century Fox, said the deal would strengthen its international standing with a presence in the strategic Italian market, while Sky Italia becomes the Italian home for one of the world’s leading television brands.
“HBO is by far one of the world leaders in producing fantastic scripted programming, with series and movies that over the years turned into a social and cultural phenomena worldwide,” Sky Italia vp programming Andrea Scrosati said in a statement. “We believe that having the HBO product next to some key European and Italian productions will give even more relevance to the great creativity that this country is able to express and that Sky Italia is supporting directly or through acquisitions.”
Added HBO’s president in charge of programming sales Charles Schreger: “In similar arrangements around the globe, both sides have benefited greatly and we anticipate that will once again be the case here.”
