HBO’s Michael Lombardo and his partner, architect Sonny Ward, will host a $5,000-per-person roundtable discussion with Michelle Obama at their Los Angeles home on July 15, with proceeds benefiting the Democratic National Committee, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
On July 16, the first lady will also give the keynote address for the Grammy Museum’s first inaugural Jane Ortner Education Award Luncheon, recognizing teachers who make outstanding use of music in their classroom instruction.
With the midterm election looming, the Obamas have been intensifying their efforts to raise money for the Democrats.
“Your contribution and participation will help to ensure that the Democrats keep control of the Senate and make significant headway in winning back the House,” according to a fundraising letter sent to people in Hollywood in late June. “The truth is, we simply cannot win in 2016 without building our base in 2014. And we cannot do that without a strong Democratic National Committee. With the Tea Party and other extremists taking ground, the time is now to start raising money and protect our future.”
Scandal creator Shonda Rhimes will host a reception and dinner for the president at her Los Angeles home on July 23. Actress Kerry Washington is co-hosting the event, with ticket prices ranging from $1,000 to $32,400 per guest.
On July 24, the president will attend a roundtable discussion at the L.A. home of Live Nation’s Michael Rapino and wife Jolene Rapino. The $32,400-per-person event is limited to 30 guests.
According to an email invite obtained by THR, supporters were told that the Rapino fundraiser would be the “last trip to Los Angeles the president will be making this year and a truly special opportunity to interact with the leader of the free world in an off-the-record, small forum.”
