History is banking on more Vikings. The cable network’s debut scripted series, which got a blockbuster launch pad after The Bible in 2013, has been renewed for a third season.
The Michael Hirst-created period drama will resume production this summer, with another batch of 10 episodes set to debut in 2015.
Vikings‘ renewal comes at the halfway point of its sophomore run, where it’s currently averaging 3.4 million viewers for every episode — 1.5 million of them in the advertiser-favored adults 18-49 demographic. Live-plus-7 data has the first few episodes of the season jumping 51 percent to 5.1 million viewers.
“Vikings has taken viewers by storm and has established itself as one of the most compelling, visually stunning dramas on television,” said History and H2 executive vp and general manager Dirk Hoogstra. “With its large, passionate and loyal fan base, Vikings has cemented History firmly in the scripted series genre, just as we are the leaders in reality television.”
The series came to History from MGM Television, which is also the worldwide distributor outside of Ireland and Canada.
