2016 Emmys host Jimmy Kimmel closed the ceremony with a wink to his longtime pal Howard Stern, whose radio show Kimmel has appeared on many times.
“We hit ’em with the Hein,” Kimmel said quickly at the end of the broadcast on ABC, which is a mostly meaningless utterance akin to the “Baba Booey” catchphrase that caught on with Howard Stern fans in the 1990s.
Jon Hein is the host of the Howard Stern wrap-up show on the same Sirius Satellite channel as Stern’s show. Stern writer Jason Kaplan advanced the “Hit ’em with the Hein” phrase in an effort to annoy his colleague.
Comedian Sarah Silverman made a Baba Booey reference during the Democratic National Committee Convention in July, which sent Howard Stern fans reeling.
Kimmel and Stern are known to be close personal friends, having vacationed together with their families in Mexico in 2014.
