Homeland executive producer Alex Cary has inked a new multiyear overall deal with 20th Century Fox TV.
As part of the pact, the U.K. native will remain with Showtime’s Peabody Award-winning CIA drama, for which he has been promoted from co-executive producer for the show’s upcoming second season. The series will begin shooting in May and is set to return in September.
Cary will be tasked with developing new fare for 20th TV, the parent company to Homeland studio Fox 21.
Cary has a long history with the 20th brand, having proven himself on the set of 2009’s Lie to Me. He began as a story editor on the Tim Roth Fox drama and rose to showrunner. It was on that show that 20th TV chairman Gary Newman says he witnessed firsthand the former military man’s ability to meld deep character with procedural storytelling. By early 2010, his studio had inked its first overall deal with Cary.
“Alex is one of those great situations where we were able to get someone early in his career and he did an incredible job,” Newman says of what he dubs a “meteoric rise.” He added, “We certainly weren’t going to let him go.”
Although the studio chief says there haven’t been any detailed discussions about future projects, the plan is to sit down with Cary following the upfronts in May to discuss potential ideas to take out to the networks later this year. Newman isn’t ruling cable out as an option, but he acknowledges that the goal for Cary is to have a broad network hit.
Cary, whose other small-screen writing credits include USA’s In Plain Sight and FX’s The Riches, is repped by WME, New Wave Entertainment and attorney Adam Kaller.
