There’s apparently a myriad of possible choices when planning a thriller like Showtime’s Golden Globe-winning drama, Homeland. But, imagine if one of its key characters were killed during the first season? Well, that could have been a reality at one point in time.

Executive producer and co-creator Howard Gordon spoke with KCRW’s The Business host and The Hollywood Reporter’s Editor at Large Kim Masters about reports that the series was planning to kill off Golden Globe nominee Damian Lewis’ character, Sgt. Nicholas Brody.
“In our earliest iterations we weren’t sure the Brody story would last past the year,” Gordon says. “Obviously, everyone has been on the chopping block at one point or another in the story room…. He’s not going anywhere for the foreseeable future, no.”

The former 24 exec producer also speaks about Globe winner Claire Danes’ inspired acting as CIA agent Carrie Mathison, who believed that Brody had been turned by al-Qaeda, his upcoming NBC series Awake, and why he turned away from a career as a novelist.
