COLOGNE, Germany – Germans will get a double dose of House of Cards when the Emmy-winning Netflix series finally hits free-TV screens here next month. In a first-of-its-kind move, House of Cards will go out in both its original English version and a German-dubbed version on sister channels owned by by local broadcaster ProSiebenSat.1.
ProSieben will premiere House of Cards in English, with German subtitles, on its new digital network, Maxx, on Nov. 6. The same first-season pilot episode — this time dubbed into German — will bow on the group’s flagship network Sat.1 in a late-night Sunday slot on Nov. 10.
The two channels will broadcast the series in parallel, with Maxx airing two original language episodes a week in primetime and Sat.1 sticking to its weekly late-night slot for the German version.

House of Cards has already aired on pay TV here, on 21st Century Fox’s Sky Atlantic channel, and is carried on ProSiebenSat.1’s VOD service Maxdome, so die-hard German fans have likely already got their House of Cards fix. But ProSieben’s innovative programming strategy for the show will test the more mainstream appeal of the series here and, by extension, high-end serialized dramas in general, traditionally a tough sell for German free-TV channels.
Broadcasting a series in English is almost unheard of for a German free-TV network, so ProSieben’s House of Cards experiment will be closely watched by the local industry.
