The real-life presidential election is firmly in the American public’s rearview mirror, but in the House of Cards universe, there’s still plenty of campaigning left to be done.
On Monday, Netflix released the first official trailer for the upcoming fifth season of the Kevin Spacey-Robin Wright political drama. The first footage from season five appears to dive right back into Frank Underwood’s battle against Joel Kinnaman’s Will Conway for the White House, with Underwood appearing to come out on top (if a brief graphic about the electoral college breakdown, which has Underwood ahead with 255 compared to Conway’s 245, is to be believed.)
And it appears a 2016 triumph might just be the beginning for the manipulative and devious Underwoods.
“Underwood 2016, 2020, 2024, 2028, 2032, 2036. One nation Underwood,” Spacey’s character states.
The trailer provides plenty of other hints of what’s to come. Returning faces include regulars like Michael Kelly and Neve Campbell, as well as Paul Sparks (Tom Yates) and Boris McGiver (former newspaper editor Tom Hammerschmidt), among others. There’s even a brief glance at new addition Patricia Clarkson.
The series returns at the end of the month after a long hiatus — season four premiered on March 4, 2016. The new season marks the first without series creator and former showrunner Beau Willimon. Instead, senior writers Frank Pugliese and Melissa James Gibson have taken the showrunner reins on the upcoming season.
Season five of House of Cards premieres Tuesday, May 30 on Netflix. Check out the full trailer below:
