While the audience of ABC’s How to Get Away With Murder might finally know who killed Wes (Alfred Enoch), the characters on the show still don’t — which means they’ll still have to untangle the mystery when the show returns for its previously announced fourth season.
Although the killer was revealed in the season three finale, the show also introduced plenty more questions that need answers in the new season. Below, five of the most burning queries for HTGAWM season four.
1. Who is Dominic?
It was revealed in the final moments of the season that the assassin who took down Wes was actually hired by Laurel’s dad — and Laurel (Karla Souza) knows him. But what is their history together? “He is actually more my friend than he is my father’s, and I think we’ll find that out,” Souza told THR after the finale.
2. Where will the season take place?
“What I’m excited about is that [Laurel’s dad] being the murderer really opens this door to a whole new world that I have been excited to explore, something that takes us out of Annalise’s little world and puts us into [the world of] this big powerful telecommunications czar and all the power that wields,” creator Pete Souza told THR. But does that mean the group will stay in Philadelphia, or will they migrate closer to the Castillos as their pursuit of the killer intensifies?
3. How will the relationships fare?
In the closing moments of the finale, Oliver (Conrad Ricamora) proposed to Connor (Jack Falahee). But considering the two have spent their entire relationship off and on, with both stepping away for different reasons over the past few years, are they ready to take that plunge? Michaela (Aja Naomi King) and Asher (Matt McGorry) also took a major step in their relationship by saying “I love you” to one another. Nowalk said that no matter how either relationship progresses, he thinks all the characters are maturing. “I’m excited because I feel all the characters are growing up,” he said. “I think that’s what this finale really was about for me — growing up for the better and the worse.”
. I’m like, how? What?” the star tells THR of learning the murderer’s identity.”]
4. How big is the conspiracy?
Dominic was also in contact with D.A. Denver — which means more people were involved in the crime and subsequent cover-up. “We’ve hinted at things, but I think we now need to really tell the audience what’s really going on,” Souza told THR. “How does Dominic know D.A. Denver? Does that mean Laurel’s father knows D.A. Denver? Is it possible that they know about the Mahoneys? It’s much more complicated than anyone realized.”
5. What kind of role will Viola Davis play?
In introducing Dominic and revealing that Laurel’s father was behind the murder, HTGAWM also provided the perfect setup to switch the focus from Annalise’s law practice and Middleton University to the corrupt world of Laurel’s powerful father. And if the action pivots to the world of the Castillos, that means Annalise won’t necessarily need to be there to bring the group together. Now that Davis has won an Oscar, it’s perfectly plausible that she could take on a reduced role.
