Howard Stern gave an emotional farewell to America’s Got Talent, after appearing on the NBC reality competition for four seasons.
In a video that sees him chatting with various people of New York City, the radio icon noted his initial motivation to join the series.
“I thought it would be really cool to be a judge, because I think I have something to offer,” he says. “If I had any dream about this, it’s that I could take someone who was struggling and seriously give advice. I was told over and over again that I had no talent. I was in college radio. No one was banking on me. I sent a copy of my show to my father, my father wrote me back a five-page letter and was brutally honest. … It wasn’t harsh, I think it was out of love.”
He admits that in becoming a judge on the competition, “I did the most shocking thing of my career — I was on a family show,” but has loved meeting kids and parents who recognize him while out on the town. “I’ll go to a restaurant and parents will bring over their 10-year-olds to sit on my lap to take a picture. I’m like, ‘Oh my god.’ It’s kind of funny to me because this never happened to me in my career.”
“I’ve had such incredible moments on this show, I really have,” he added in the video, which aired during the 10th season’s finale on Wednesday. “I still get chills when I walk out on the stage. It has been phenomenal.”
