The streaming company has ordered a half-hour comedy pilot from Rogen and his producing partner Evan Goldberg, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
Future Man chronicles a janitor by day, world-ranked gamer by night who is tasked with preventing the extinction of humans after mysterious visitors from the future declare him to be the key to defeating the imminent super-race invasion.
Kyle Hunter and Ariel Schaffir (Rogen’s upcoming Sausage Party) wrote the project and will exec produce with Rogen, Goldberg, James Weaver and Matt Tolmach. Rogen and Goldberg will also direct the pilot.
Future Man hails from Sony Pictures Television, Rogen’s Point Grey Pictures and Matt Tolmach Productions.
Future Man drew interest from several outlets, including Showtime. President David Nevins mentioned a possible Rogen project at the network’s Television Critics Association summer press tour panel earlier this month. (Hulu also made news at TCA when it announced that it would roll out new episodes of original series on a weekly basis — in contrast to Netflix and Amazon’s approach.)
In addition to the Hulu project, Rogen and Goldberg also have AMC’s comic-book adaptation of Preacher and the FX animated comedy Bigfoot.
The order comes in the midst of a banner year for Hulu. In addition to acquiring all of Seinfeld, the streaming company has made an aggressive push for original series. In addition to upcoming dramas 11/22/63, from Stephen King and JJ Abrams, and Jason Katims‘ The Way, Hulu also has comedies Difficult People, from exec producer Amy Poehler, and the fourth season of The Mindy Project, which was canceled by Fox in May.
Hulu’s other original comedies include Quick Draw, Deadbeat, The Awesomes and The Hotwives of Las Vegas.
