Hulu’s Carrie Brownstein Comedy Finds Leads in Taylor Dearden, Aubrey Peeples

Hulu has found its leading ladies for its comedy pilot based on Carrie Brownstein’s memoir Hunger Makes Me a Modern Girl.

Taylor Dearden (Sweet/Vicious) and Aubrey Peeples (Nashville, Jem and the Holograms) have been tapped to star in the half-hour comedy pilot Search and Destroy.

Produced by Annapurna Television, the project is loosely inspired by Brownstein’s memoir as well as her experiences as a young musician growing up in the Pacific Northwest during the underground feminist punk-rock movement in the 1990s. The pilot is about a young woman, a band and a community learning how to be unafraid of their own noise. (Brownstein first rose to fame as a member of the band Excuse 17 before forming Sleater-Kinney.)

Dearden will topline the pilot as Karen Wolff, a nonconformist who secretly wishes to fit in and be accepted. Writing and playing music are her means of being present. The role marks Dearden’s follow-up to MTV’s critically praised but short-lived drama Sweet/Vicious. Dearden is repped by Coronel Group.

Peeples will take on the role of Charlotte, whose fierceness is motivated as much by injustice and inequality as it is by her desire to be impactful and do the right thing and who has a unique singing style and confrontational lyrics. The actress is best known for her leading role in the Jem and the Holograms reboot and ABC-turned-CMT’s Nashville. She is repped by Gersh, Snow Entertainment and Bloom Hergott.

Annapurna’s Megan Ellison, Sue Naegle and Ali Krug will executive produce alongside Brownstein, who will write and direct the pilot. Brownstein will not, at this point, have an onscreen role in the pilot and potential series.
