Class is about to be dismissed at East Los High.
Hulu’s high school-set drama will end with its current fourth season. An hourlong special, titled East Los High: Finale Event, will debut this fall on the streamer.
The pickup comes nearly a year after the series’ entire 12-episode fourth season premiered in July 2016. The hourlong special will pick up eight months after the season four finale cliffhanger as the crew prepares to leave high school behind and possibly East LA altogether as they start a journey of self-discovery. Hulu teases a “romantic, sexy and emotional” series finale.
Co-creator Kathleen Bedoya will pen the finale special with Luisa Leschin and Chris Franco. Katie Elmore Mota and Carlos Reza will direct. Bedoya exec produces the series with Mota and Mauricio Mota of Wise Entertainment.
East Los High premiered in 2013 just as Hulu was beginning to venture into original scripted series, and still ranks as one of its longest-running originals. Hulu is preparing to say goodbye to two of its original series, with The Mindy Project also set to kick off its final season this fall.
The move comes as Hulu increases its focus on prestige original dramas such as the recently renewed The Handmaid’s Tale. AMC and SundanceTV president of original programming Joel Stillerman was recently tapped to fill the newly created position of chief content officer.
In addition to renewing The Handmaid’s Tale, Hulu also recently picked up a new drama series from House of Cards creator Beau Willimon and a new Marvel entry from Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage. Other upcoming dramas at the network include the 9/11 drama The Looming Tower and the Stephen King-J.J. Abrams series Castle Rock.
