‘I Am Cait’: Caitlyn Jenner Gets Personal in Series Premiere

“I just hope I get it right,” Caitlyn Jenner expressed emotionally in the first few moments of the new E! eight-part docuseries, I Am Cait.

Caitlyn confesses to feeling an immense amount of responsibility to be a spokesperson for the transgender community. After all, she clarifies, “I have a voice and there are so many people out there that do not.”

But this first episode isn’t all about the larger trans community. First, Cait has to introduce herself to her family, starting with her mother, Esther, and her two sisters, Lisa and Pam. Luckily, Cait has two fun and supportive friends that will be featured on the show, Ronda, her friend and personal assistant, and Courtney, her devoted hair stylist.

While at times, Caitlyn’s mother struggles with using the newly appropriate pronouns for Caitlyn, her support is clear. She professes to the camera, “I think he’s a very good-looking woman,” and then later admits to liking Caitlyn’s personality better than Bruce’s.

But of course, a show with Caitlyn wouldn’t be complete without her children. In an off-the-cuff moment, Kylie FaceTimes Caitlyn and Caitlyn accepts, realizing too late that this will be Kylie’s first time seeing Caitlyn. She worries her face is scary to her daughter, but Kylie, still loopy from a trip to the dentist, reassures her, “You’re not scaring me; you look pretty!” It’s definitely an aw-worthy moment for viewers.

Soon enough, it’s Kim and Kanye’s turn to make an appearance at Cait’s Malibu estate. The chic couple appears more at ease with Caitlyn. Kanye even tells Cait that what she’s doing is incredibly brave and then bandies about some hyperboles, much like Kanye tends to do.

But it’s the second closet visit that Kim makes to Caitlyn’s room where the series takes off. Cait pulls out a Tom Ford dress she is excited to wear and so proud of, only to be told by Kim, “Mom has that.” Consider that bubble burst! Possible solution? Have Caitlyn show up at the same place as Kris in the same dress and then you’ve got the best “Who wore it best?” column the tabloids have ever seen.

The series takes a more serious turn as Caitlyn shows her mother a story about Kyler Prescott, a young transperson who recently committed suicide. Cait decides to contact the Prescott family and go down to San Diego to show her support.

Knowing how vicious photographers can be, Caitlyn is forced to change cars three times in order to shake the paparazzi that are following her wherever she goes. The last thing she wants to do is expose a mourning family to photographers out to capture the $250,000 rate for a shot of Caitlyn.

The Prescott family welcomes Caitlyn into their home and discusses that even with the support of family and friends, the life of a transgender teen is still a huge struggle. Caitlyn relates and reveals to the camera that she too once had contemplated suicide. Kyler’s mom then invites Caitlyn to a ceremony to pay tribute to Kyler, where friends gather to release balloons. The episode ends with Caitlyn vowing to help in whatever way she can with transgender issues, like violence, suicide and transitioning.

I Am Cait airs Sundays at 8 p.m. on E!
