In a TV landscape littered with more than 500 scripted originals and another 700 reality and docuseries, figuring out what to watch can feel like a Herculean task.
In the week of Aug. 6-12 alone, more than 30 shows have their season or series premieres. The Hollywood Reporter is sorting through the lineup to highlight the most anticipated new and returning shows on broadcast, cable and streaming. Here’s what to watch for the week of Aug. 6. On broadcast …
ABC is serving up a twist on the deserted-island show with Castaways, which will follow 12 people who are each stranded alone on a series of South Pacific islands. The only way off is to wait for rescue or quit — but there’s also the tantalizing possibility they’ll make contact with the others. The series will also show the lives that the contestants left behind.
Premieres: Tuesday, Aug. 7, at 10 p.m. ET/PT
On cable …
Several high-profile cable shows — Better Call Saul, Ballers (heads up, Sen. Warren) and Insecure, among them — kick off new seasons this week, but save a spot for AMC’s oddball Lodge 49, starring Wyatt Russell as an ex-surfer at loose ends who finds an unlikely community in a fraternal lodge in Long Beach. Sonya Cassidy and Brent Jennings also star.
Premieres: Monday, Aug. 6, at 10 p.m. ET/PT
On streaming …
Originally developed for The CW, Insatiable tells the story of a bullied teenager, Patty (Disney Channel grad Debby Ryan), who’s out for revenge and enlists a lawyer turned pageant coach (Dallas Roberts) to help her get it. The Netflix show has generated controversy over a perception of fat-shaming in the trailer, but creator Lauren Gussis insists there’s much more to the tale.
Premieres: Friday, Aug. 10.
In case you missed it …
The seventh season of Adult Swim’s Venture Bros., the beloved and twisted sendup of 1960s-era adventure cartoons like Jonny Quest, premieres Sunday, Aug. 5. New episodes air Sundays at midnight, and you can catch up via the Adult Swim app or on Hulu.
