Getty ImagesThe International Emmys, which honor excellence in TV programming outside the U.S., has raised the profile of shortform series by giving them their own new category at a planned awards gala to be held in November 2017 in New York City.
“As media changes, International Emmy categories change too and we felt we needed to give special recognition to the rapid and important growth of short form in the industry,” Bruce L. Paisner, president of the International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, said Monday in a statement about original fiction and nonfiction episodes under 30 minutes in length.
Shortform series were previously recognized by the International Academy at the International Digital Emmy Awards at MIPTV each spring. Raising their profile to the International Emmy Awards gala follows the Primetime Emmy Awards also expanding its shortform categories in response to new storytelling tools across a range of digital platforms.
The International Emmy Awards on Monday also unveiled at MIPCOM the nominees for the 2016 kids TV programming competition. In the Kids: Digital category, the Australian series Doodles from Screen Queensland and Gaming Show Interactive from Canada’s Secret Location will compete against the Brazilian series Young Hearts from TV Globo and Face TV from Japan’s NHK.
And the Kids: Animation competition will see the Shaun the Sheep series from the U.K.’s Aardman Animations and Larva in New York from South Korean producer TUBA vie against Peanuts from France’s NORMAAL Animation and S.O.S. Fada Manu from Brazilian producer Gloob/Boutique Films.
The International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences earlier unveiled 40 nominees from 15 countries to compete in 10 categories for the International Emmys, to be presented at a Nov. 21 gala hosted by Alan Cumming at the Hilton New York Hotel.
