It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia has made TV history.
FX on Thursday announced that it has renewed the scripted comedy for four additional seasons. That takes the series through its 18th season and officially snaps Ozzie and Harriet‘s record as the longest-running live-action scripted comedy in TV history. (The ABC comedy ran for 14 seasons.)
FX CEO John Landgraf made the announcement as part of Disney’s investor day presentation. The news comes as both Landgraf and producers have been open about keeping It’s Always Sunny on for as long as possible. “We’re going to keep doing it forever if people keep watching,” creator and star Rob McElhenney said in January while promoting his Apple series, Mythic Quest.
It’s Always Sunny was FX’s first scripted comedy. The series moved to younger-skewing cable channel FXX in 2013. The show is part of a comedy lineup at FX/FXX that also includes Archer, Atlanta, Better Things, Breeders and Dave, among others.
The comedy centers on the misguided dreams and blundered schemes of the gang at Paddy’s Pub: Mac (McElhenney), Dennis (Glenn Howerton), Charlie (Charlie Day), Dee (Kaitlin Olson) and Frank (Danny DeVito). The series is exec produced by McElhenney, Howerton, Day, Michael Rotenberg, Nick Frenkel, Tom Lofaro, Scott Marder and David Hornsby. The show is produced by FX Productions.
