‘Jane the Virgin’ Team Talks Wedding, Series Endgame and Politics

Although Jane the Virgin fans might be evenly split between #TeamMichael and #TeamRafael, the cast of The CW sophomore comedy seemed firmly planted in the former’s corner at a “For Your Consideration” event on Tuesday.

When asked about a wedding, co-stars Jaime Camil and Andrea Navedo — aka Jane’s parents — showed their support for Jane’s rekindled romance and, even more surprisingly, so did the actor who plays rival Rafael, Justin Baldoni.

“I’m team Michael too, don’t worry,” Baldoni told the crowd of potential Emmy voters to uproarious applause and laughter.

It was only a matter of time before questions erupted about whether Jane (Gina Rodriguez) and Michael (Brett Dier) would actually tie the knot, and more importantly, consummate their relationship, after getting engaged again earlier this season. With nearly two seasons of the telenovela-inspired series under their belts, the cast is now well-trained at avoiding spoilers.

“That could happen,” Dier said coyly about whether Michael would pop Jane’s cherry. “We think we’re getting married,” Rodriguez confirmed. (Also helping their case was the fact that the actors weren’t set to read the season two finale until the following day.)

One person who knows exactly what’s to come? Showrunner Jennie Snyder Urman, who said she and the writer’s room planned out where each main character would end the season at the start of season two.

“On this show, you have to plan like every inch of it because there are so many, many stories in each episode. You don’t want anything to be random and you want it all to come back and wrap around,” she said. “We always start the beginning of the season knowing what the last, really, what the finale is going to be.”

Added Snyder Urman: “I feel you wanting that wedding. I hear you.”

The showrunner also revealed she already knows how the entire series ends, seeing as it was part of her pitch to The CW when she was one of several writers approached to adapt the Venezuelan telenovela Juana la Virgen for the U.S.

“I know the end of the whole series. That last scene I have in my head very specifically,” she said. “There is an ending where a lot of things click into place, that’s all I’ll say, but there’s a lot of planning.”

But in addition to the shocking cliffhangers and complicated love triangles, the show has drawn increased notice in season two for some of its more grounded storylines like Petra’s struggle with postpartum depression and Abuela’s journey to finally getting her green card after decades of living in the U.S. illegally.

Ivonne Coll, who plays Abuela, admitted she had hesitations about her role at first, particularly the fact that she would be the only character speaking all Spanish on an American television show.

“I didn’t understand at the beginning the dimensions of the character and what it represents and the importance of that character socially speaking and politically speaking right now in our country here in the United States of North America,” she said.

Immigration has become an increasingly important topic thanks to presidential candidates like Donald Trump — who has talked repeatedly about his desire to build a wall to block foreigners from crossing the border.

“I think I reflect, through my character, through Jennie’s work, a very, very big population here in the United States. People who contribute, people who work,” Coll said. “The audience has embraced it and they appreciate that she’s speaking Spanish. … I was very adamant about that but it turned out so good. I am so honored.”
