Jeffrey Tambor took home best actor honors at the Screen Actors Guild Awards on Saturday night.
The star of Amazon’s Transparent won the award for outstanding performance by a male actor in a comedy series over fellow nominees Ty Burrell (Modern Family), Louis C.K. (Louie), William H. Macy (Shameless) and Jim Parsons (The Big Bang Theory).
After a few jokes, Tambor — who plays transgender parent Maura Pfefferman on the Jill Soloway-created show — closed his speech by saying, “I would just like to dedicate this award to the non-Maura Pfeffermans who don’t have a lot of cash for their operations, for their medicine, for their freedom.”
Backstage, the actor expanded on those points, adding: “Tonight in my speech, I wanted to reach out to people who are not Maura Pfeffermans and who don’t shop at the mall — the people who are really scraping by to get their freedom and their medicine and their surgeries,” he said, acknowledging that he was shaking when he gave his acceptance speech on the Shrine Auditorium stage.
“It’s not a red-carpet thing; it’s a people thing,” the Transparent star went on to say, applauding new platforms like his show’s home, Amazon. “People who are not paying attention to streaming are missing a big thing because entertainment is being reformed,” said Tambor. “The story arc and the way that characterization is being done, the whole thing is changing.”
Sarah Silverman and Jason Bateman presented the award. “Get up here, Dad,” said Bateman during the announcement, referring to their Arrested Development roles.
Game of Thrones, Homeland and House of Cards each scored a leading three nominations in the TV categories. The 22nd annual SAG Awards were handed out Saturday during a ceremony simulcast on TNT and TBS.
