Jerry Seinfeld Talks About Taking Over for Regis Philbin’s on ‘Live!’ (Video)

While a permanent host replacement for Live! to take over when Regis Philbin exits the show on Nov. 19 has not been announced, Kelly Ripa will not be alone.

As previously announced, Jerry Seinfeld will sit beside Ripa during the first week after Philbin’s exit.

Seinfeld sat down with David Letterman on The Late Show on Wednesday and talked a little about his new role as host, which he dubbed “Operation: Smooth Transition.” Seinfeld told Letterman that he thought hosting the show wouldn’t be that hard.

“When Regis does it, it doesn’t seem that hard because he’s the gold standard,” said Letterman.

Seinfeld admitted that he may not be able to do “that thing” that both Regis and Letterman do. “He sits there and … he just kind of takes up people’s time,” Seinfeld said. “But you do it in a way that people say, ‘I could take more of this.'”

Seinfeld also talked about his friendship with Philbin, saying that the long-time host, while known for his smile and happy personality, has “a dark side.”

“He didn’t know when to end the show. The first time I had dinner with him like 10 years ago, he said, ‘How many years do I have to do this? When is it going to be over?’ And I told him never,” Seinfeld joked. “These are Pope jobs.”

Seinfeld will be the first in a long string of hosting cameos on the series. Philbin, who leaves the daytime talk show after 28 year, has not been replaced yet. How I Met Your Mother star Neil Patrick Harris will host the following week.

With her new five-year deal, Ripa and Disney-ABC Domestic Television have committed to produce the series through 2017.
