A shakeup is going on behind the scenes of NBC’s The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. The late-night talk show’s longtime head writer A.D. Miles is leaving his post after eight years of working with Fallon. Sources say he’ll transition over the next few weeks.
The 45-year-old plans to go back to narrative writing and acting, mainly for films and half-hour series. Prior to his work in late night, Miles played various comedic roles, most notably portraying Gary in Wet Hot American Summer. He’ll also return to Los Angeles from The Tonight Show‘s home in New York along with his wife and two daughters.
Sources say Miles has been thinking about transitioning for some time and that the late night format was very demanding and didn’t allow him time to pursue other interests. Fallon and Miles are said to be continuing their working relationship together, and currently have an animated feature in the works.
“Riding Jimmy Fallon’s coattails for the past eight years has given me all the confidence I need to strike out on my own and work on a movie with Jimmy Fallon,” Miles said Wednesday in a statement.
Added Fallon, “Miles was there for the launch of Late Night as well as the launch of The Tonight Show. He is one of the funniest, most creative people I’ve ever met and I can’t wait to work on this next project with him. He’s family to us, and we are going to miss him.”
The news of Miles’ departure comes as Fallon has suffered intense ratings competition in recent weeks from CBS’ The Late Show With Stephen Colbert. Since Donald Trump took office, Colbert has consistently edged out Fallon in overall viewers (Fallon, though, continues to have a leg-up on the 18-49 year-olds). A replacement for Miles has yet to be named.
