Brothers and bandmates Joe and Nick Jonas could soon be television rivals.
While Joe will appear on The CW’s upcoming singing competition The Next, premiering Thursday, Aug. 16, at 9 p.m. ET/PT, Nick recently tweeted that he is being considered for a judging position alongside Mariah Carey on American Idol.
“The rumors are true,” Nick tweeted to his 4.6 million followers last week. “It would be a dream come true if it happens.” He later added in a reply to a fan, “This is something I’d love to do.”
Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Joe throws his full support behind his younger brother, saying that Nick would be “great for the role.”
“He’s a great producer, songwriter, musician, and even though we’re young, we’ve all been able to have such a great career so far,” Joe says. “I feel like for Nick, he’d be able to bring a young approach to the show.”
Outside of recording and performing as a group, both Nick and Joe have gone on to pursue solo endeavors musically, with Nick taking a special liking to producing and writing for other artists – a quality that Joe says would bode well for an Idol gig.
“He definitely knows what he’s talking about in the business,” Joe adds. “I think he’d probably bring the tough love occasionally and a dry sense of humor [that] I think would work well.”
Joe also reveals that it was Nick who encouraged him to take the position on The Next.
“When I was getting the show together, I was kind of asking my brothers if they thought this was a good idea and I remember Nick just telling me I should go for it,” he recalls. “His words were like, ‘You know, you’d be on that seat for a reason.’ And I was like, ‘Alright, cool.’
“So it was encouraging, and I’d say the same thing to him,” he adds. “I feel like he could bring a lot to the show. Him and Mariah, it would be, I think, funny television.”
