The comedy from The Office‘s Steve Carell and Greg Daniels has added six actors to its cast: John Malkovich, Ben Schwartz, Tawny Newsome and Diana Silvers will all be series regulars alongside Carell, while Jimmy O. Yang and Alex Sparrow will recur.
Netflix ordered the comedy straight to series in January, several months after President Donald Trump announced plans for a sixth branch of the military dedicated to protecting American interests in space. The 10-episode series, set to premiere in 2020, is a workplace comedy about the people on Earth tasked with creating the new command. Carell stars as Gen. Mark R. Naird, who has been tapped by the White House to get “boots on the moon” by 2024.
Paul King (the Paddington movies) is set to direct the pilot and one other episode.
Malkovich, who stars in HBO’s upcoming The New Pope, will play Dr. Adrian Mallory, the brilliant, arrogant head science advisor who hopes to prevent outer space from becoming the next international battlefield.
Schwartz (Parks and Recreation, House of Lies) will play F. Tony Scarapiducci, a media consultant whose Machiavellian goals only sometimes align with those of Naird or Space Force. The actor reunites with Daniels, who co-created Parks and Rec with Mike Schur.
Silvers (Booksmart) will play Mark’s daughter, Erin. A popular A-student in Washington, she’s an outcast in Wild Horse, Colorado, where Space Force is headquartered, and turns to delinquency.
Newsome (Sherman’s Showcase, Bajillion Dollar Properties) will play helicopter pilot Angela Ali. She’s ambitious and competitive and has secret dreams she keeps close to the vest.
Yang (Crazy Rich Asians) will recur as Dr. Chan Kaifang, Mallory’s right-hand man and a brilliant astrophysicist and engineer who emigrated from China to the U.S. as a teen and loves all things American. Sparrow (UnReal) plays Yuri “Bobby” Telatovich, an observer from the Russian government who is curious about many things in Naird’s life, including his daughter and Javelin missile specs.
Carell and Daniels are executive producing the series with 3 Arts’ Howard Klein.
Sources told The Hollywood Reporter that Carell — who also stars in Apple’s The Morning Show, due to premiere in November — struck a lucrative deal for Space Force, with his salary including co-creator and exec producer fees likely topping the $1 million per episode that castmembers of CBS’ The Big Bang Theory previously netted. With The Office ranking as one of Netflix’s most-watched series, the streamer aggressively pursued the project and the show was not shopped elsewhere. Since the series order for Space Force, NBCUniversal acquired streaming rights to The Office for its upcoming Peacock platform, so the new comedy will mean Carell remains a presence on Netflix.
