John Oliver spent a lot of time talking about the testimony of Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh on Sunday’s episode of Last Week Tonight.
Kavanaugh’s testimony came after that of Dr. Christine Blasey Ford, who alleges that an inebriated Kavanaugh pinned her on a bed, muffled her cries and tried removing her clothes when both were teenagers in the 1980s. She said she thought he was “accidentally going to kill me” and was “100 percent certain” that her attacker was Kavanaugh. The latter has emphatically denied the accusation, both before and during his testimony.
“We need to talk about Brett Kavanaugh: Supreme Court nominee and walking crushed-beer can,” Oliver said on his HBO talk show.
Oliver referred to Ford as “composed” but said that Kavanaugh “came straight out of the gate weird.”
Showing a clip of an emotional Kavanaugh, Oliver quipped: “He’s crying at the memory of lifting weights at his friend Tobin’s house. I hate to say it, but I’m starting to think that men might be too emotional for the Supreme Court.”
In another clip, Kavanaugh listed a group of females by first name with whom he was friends in high school.
Quipped Oliver: “That’s not testimony though, is it? That’s a plaintiff’s spoken-word cover of ‘Mambo No. 5.'”
Oliver also went after Sen. Orrin Hatch, a Republican from Utah, who referred to Ford as “attractive” and “pleasing.”
“You should not use the word ‘pleasing’ to describe a sexual assault survivor recounting one of the most painful moments of her life,” Oliver said. “You shouldn’t really use it to describe anything — maybe, maybe watching milk mix into your coffee. Except you know what, not even then, because the moment you say, ‘Watching this milk is pleasing,’ you come off like a creep who’s waiting for everyone to leave the room so he can fuck his coffee.”
Oliver ended his show by passionately arguing that he can’t see a good reason for pushing Kavanaugh into the position, noting that any Republican pick will likely restrict abortion rights.
“You don’t need to choose an unhinged partisan with a multiple accusations of sexual misconduct hanging over him,” he said. “So it feels like they’re doing this, just to deliver a ‘fuck you’ to Democrats, and even more directly, a ‘fuck you’ to women.”
