In his last broadcast before the election, John Oliver implored voters not to assume they will get the outcome they want.
“This election hasn’t so much appealed to our better angels as it has groped our better angels, mocked their weight and called them 6s at best,'” Oliver said as he reflected back on the presidential campaign. He pointed out that Republican nominee Donald Trump has “a genuine shot at the presidency” despite a litany of flaws including “having blown up a political party, undermined confidence in our electoral system, declared open season on journalists and unleashed a river of racism and misogyny.”
Oliver said he also feels like “we’ve lost sight” that Trump has “really stupid hair.”
Then, it was time for Oliver to remember a time when a Trump candidacy was just comedic fodder. He played a clip from 2013 when he guest hosted The Daily Show. In the clip, Oliver begs Trump to run for POTUS.
“Do it. Look at me. Do it,” he said, addressing Trump. “I will personally write you a campaign check now on behalf of this country, which does not want you to be president, but which badly wants you to run.”
Present-day Oliver puts his head in his hands and says he has no defense for himself. While he wants to believe that America will reject Trump with an “innate sense of decency” that will kick in as a “moral auto-pilot” the Last Week Tonight host has a history of being very, very wrong. He played a clip of himself saying the Chicago Cubs will never win the World Series, and then told people to please vote on Tuesday.
